Yuan Jue 1 袁桷

Yuan Jue (1266 - 1327), style name Bochang, nicknamed Retired Scholar with an Honorable Manner (Qingrong Jushi), was from what is today Ningbo in Zhejiang province. According to QSCB, Chapter 6c2,3 in his youth Yuan Jue studied the imperial Inner chamber tablature. Later, perhaps in 1284/5,4 he studied the qin tradition of the Zhe school from the great master Xu Tianmin. Another teacher is said to have been Dai Biaoyuan.5

Yuan Jue is an important source for information on the qin in the 13th century. This information comes from at least two folios of his 50 folio Qingrong Jushi Ji.6 Of particular note seem to be:

  1. Qin Narration (Qin Shu)7
    This essay apparently is part of Folio 44, Qin Narration, Presented to Huang Yiran. It is discussed in QSCB, Chapter 6.C., p. 115.
  2. Concerning the calligraphy of Xu Tianmin (Ti Xu Tianmin Caoshu)8
    This is apparently in Folio 49.

Yuan Jue's poems with a qin theme include

1. Yuan Jue 袁桷
Yuan Jue (Bio/1833; 34953.145), 慶元路鄞縣人，字伯長，號清容居士 from the Ningbo area, style name Bochang, nickname Qingrong Jushi (Retired Scholar with an Honorable Manner), became a member of the 翰林國史院 Hanlin Academy. Rao Zongyi [p.83] says he is one of the most important sources of information about qin music of that time.

5. Qingrong Jushi Ji 清容居士集五十卷
Qingrong Jushi Ji, 50 Folios, is described in 18003.299 清容居士集五十卷, but there is no outline of the contents or mention of a 琴述 Qin Shu. Reference is made to 司庫提要，集，別集類. See also in QSCB, Chapter 6c2.

The essay apparently is part of Qingrong Jushi Ji Folio 44, Qin Narration, Presented to Huang Yiran (琴述，贈黃依然 Qin Shu, Zeng Huang Yiran). In addition to Xu Jian, QSCB, Chapter 6c2, see also Chapter 6a5.
