    自歎今朝初得聞，始知孤負平生耳。
    唯憂趙璧白髮生，老死人間無此聲。
    遠方士，
    爾聽五絃信為美，吾聞正始之音不如是。
    正始之音其若何？朱絃疏越清廟歌。
    一彈一唱再三歎，曲淡節稀聲不多。
    融融曳曳召元气，聽之不覺心平和。
    人情重今多賤古，古琴有絃人不撫。
    更從趙璧藝成來，二十五絃不如五。

    近來漸喜無人聽，   Now I am increasingly happy when no one is listening.
    琴格高低心自知。   Whether my qin style is refined or coarse only my heart knows.

    Birds alight, fish don't move; the moon shines above a deep river.
    Beyond the physical nothing matters; on our boat there is only qin.
    Its seven strings sate my friend; having ears means knowing music.
    Hearts at peace with sounds so mild; here there is no past or present.

    The poem mentions Jiang Yue Bai but it is probably not referring to the melody; elsewhere also called 江上琴興

    江上調玉琴，一絃清一心。
    泠泠七絃遍，萬木澄幽陰。
    能使江月白，又令江水深。
    始知梧桐枝，可以徽黃金。

    By the river playing my jade-decorated qin, plucking just one string cleanses a part of my heart.
    Cool crystal sounds from all seven strings, and the entire forest becomes a haunting enigmatic world.
    It makes the moon over the river more bright, and the river's water more deep.
    Now I begin to know this hallowed piece of wood is worthy of being decorated with golden studs.

    Thanks to Lau Shing Hon for help with the translation. (By tradition if not always in fact, 梧桐 wutong is the wood used for making qins; poets thus highly respect it as wood.)
