Amar Chitra Katha Title List
Indian classic comics 1 |
永恆圖畫故事
印度古典連環圖畫 First in the series 2 |
During the 1980s and 1990s, while working with the Festival of Asian Arts in Hong Kong, I traveled regularly to India. Indian performances always seem to connect to Indian religion, folklore, history, and so forth, and so while there I bought a number of books in order better to understand these topics. These books were mostly written by Indians and assumed a body of knowledge I did not have; so in order not to be totally lost when reading them, I found it useful as well as fun to collect and read Amar Chitra Katha comics.3
The original series began with #11 (my editions are dated 1981 and later, the lower numbered ones being reprints) and apparently ended in 1991 with #435. I have put this list of titles online in hopes that it will help me find the issues still missing from my collection. These are as follows:4

Footnotes (Shorthand references are explained on a
separate page)
1.
Amar Chitra Katha
In Sanskrit this means "Immortal Illustrated Tales".
The series was originally published by:
In the 1990s IBH began reissuing these comics on better paper, re-numbering them beginning with #501 (Rama) and apparently ending with #744 (Chokha Mela), i.e., 244 issues. These also included some new titles, but I do not have any of these (more below).
According to the Wikipedia entry
Amar Chitra Katha (viewed October 2008),
It was just at this time that I put online this listing of my own collection, adding links to help quickly remind me of the stories being told.
2.
This is from my own copy, a Sep 1983 reprint. I have not yet found out when this issue originally came out.
3.
The stories as told here are basically children's versions. As Wikipedia information expands hopefully it will become easier to learn the wide, deep and varied manifestations of the stories as told over time and in different Indian communities.
4.
Additions to the original Amar Chitra Katha title list
"In 2007, the imprint and all its titles were acquired by a new venture called ACK Media. On September 17, 2008, a new website by ACK-media was launched called
www.amarchitrakatha.com."

There is also a
title list in Wikipedia, with title numbers from both the original (#11-435) and new (#501-744) series. However, as of 2008 it was incomplete, with some errors. At present the list includes the following entries not in the original series. The first three are quite puzzling, as #364, #368 and #372 all exist under different titles in the original series.
| 364. March to Freedom 4 | "The Call for Swaraj" (compare #364 above!) |
| 368. March to Freedom 5 | "The Salt Satyagraha" (compare #368 above!) |
| 372. March to Freedom 6 | "The Tryst with Destiny" (compare #372 above!) |
| 700. Jawaharlal Nehru | (no subtitle?; Wiki) |
| 735. JRD Tata | "The Quiet Conqueror" (Wiki) |
| 736. Kalpana Chawla | (Indian astronaut; Wiki) |
| 737. Jamsetji Tata | "The Man Who Saw Tomorrow" (Wiki) |
The issue numbers found here, both original and new series, do not as yet seem to be used by ACK on its own website.
